The School of Computer Science and Technology (SCST) was first established as an undergraduate specialty in 1984. After more than three decades of development, the school now has a comprehensive academic curriculum for bachelor, master and PhD degree training. There are four departments in the school (department of Computer Science and Engineering, department of Software Engineering, department of Network Engineering, and department of Cybersecurity), each corresponds to a discipline covered by the school. The computer science and engineering discipline (national first-class specialty, provincial first-class & excellent specialty) is ranked within the top 30% among all the universities in China.
The faculty of SCST comprises over 150 members, including 24 professors and 43 associate professors (among which 92 have obtained Ph.D degrees). Many professors are honored with national titles for their exceptional achievements in research and/or teaching. These titles include IEEE Fellow, Distinguished Scientist of National Key R&D Program, Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education in the New Century and Innovation Team of Guangdong Province. The faculty members are also awarded national and provincial level outstanding funds, such as the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, Millions of Talents Project, Outstanding Youth Science Fund of Guangdong Province, and "Millions of Talents Project" of Guangdong Province.
In the past five years, the school was funded by about 50 national projects focusing on Artificial Intelligence, Service Computing, High Performance Computing, Ubiquitous Computing, Trusted Computing, Industrial Software, Collaborative Work & Design, High-speed Network, Cyber-Physical Fusion, Cybersecurity and Intelligent Manufacturing. Researches are supported by one National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center, two Key Laboratories in Guangdong Province and eight Engineering Research Centers in Guangdong Province. Faculty members have published hundreds of academic papers in high level international journals or conferences, such as IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Services Computing, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, NeurIPS, AAAI, IJCAI. In 2022, the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) index of the computer science discipline in GuangDong University of Technology (GDUT) is within the top 2‰ in the world.
Students of SCST are active in research, cultural and sports activities. They earned remarkable achievements in university students' scientific and technological innovation competitions. Over 1200 awards have been obtained, including over 650 national level awards, since 2016. In the ACM competition, teams from the school reached the final round three times with the best accomplishment ranked 32nd in the world. In the 14th "Challenge Cup" National University Students Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, students from the school won the Privilege Prize in the final round of the "Smart City" Special Competition. In the 12th "Challenge Cup" University Students Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, students from SCST clinched the National Champion title. In the 8th China International College Students ‘Internet+’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, students from the school won one gold medal and one silver medal. The students also actively participate in cultural and sports activities, such as badminton, football, basketball, choir competitions, dance competitions.
During the past 30 years, more than 3,000 masters and 15,000 undergraduates obtained their degrees. There are currently about 4,200 students in the school, including 3,200 undergraduate students and about 1,000 graduate students (masters and PhD candidates). The school has an ample selection of advanced instruments and equipment for teaching and scientific research, including 16 specialized laboratories, two provincial-level joint training bases for postgraduates and 10 university-level joint training bases for postgraduates. These laboratories and bases provide adequate technical support and comfortable settings for both teaching and research. The school has fully implemented the Action Plan for Innovation of College Students, the Cultivation Plan for Top Innovative Talents of Graduate Students, the "Thousand-seedling Plan" for high-quality graduate students, the award plan for high-level achievements of graduate students, and the overseas exchange plan for excellent students. The school also has good cooperation with well-known enterprises, such a Huawei, Alibaba, Tencent, for scientific research and internships. In addition, the school has established long-term cooperative relations with the world's top research institutes or universities in North American,European and Asia. Every year, outstanding students of SCST are invited to go on international student exchange programs and a number of foreign students are accepted for study here in SCST.
